Itinerary

Flying by the seat of my pants, the details of my trip are yet to be determined! I'm going until the money runs out and hopefully that lasts 3 years. There are a few places I must be during certain times of the year. My itinerary is based around those rare requirements (i.e. Christmas in Switzerland and Trekking Nepal in November) and goes as follows:

LA--Puerto Vallarta-Buenos Aires, Argentina, overland Chile, Peru, Bolivia, Brazil-Gryon, Switzerland working at the Chalet Martin youth hostel for at least 6m, undecided Europe with parents--Nairobi, Kenya overland Tanzania, Malawi, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Namibia, South Africa--India--Nepal--China--Bangkok, Thailand (fly to Philippines) overland Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia--Australia (working for several months)--New Zealand--South Pacific--Kailua, Hawaii, USA

How does one pack for 3 years? I'm not sure but this is what I'm bringing:
2 long sleeve shirts
3 tank tops
1 pair of pants/shorts
1 pair of jeans
2 skirts
1 sarong
1 dress
3 pair of socks
5 pair of undies
1 bra
1 sports bra
1 waterproof jacket
1 silk sleepsack
1 hat
1 pair of flip flops
1 pair of hiking shoes
1 pair of chacos
first aid kit
a plethora of anti- pills
camara
journal
book (to be determined--love to hear any suggestions for a good book while traveling!)

dude.

anything by hemingway: mostly 'the sun also rises' - nothing beats a drunk american at basque bullfights and paris pubs

and

dammit i see you already have 'farewell to arms' on your favorites list, and 'a heartbreaking work', impeccable taste, but i will still say

dave eggers' 'you shall know our velocity' about trekking the world and giving money away, if you havent already read it of course

but i am increasingly realizing this comment is fruitless

steve

ps. only five pairs? hmm id risk the extra weight

3 years!!! That is crazy! That will be so awesome though. Although, I will miss your guts. Nate and I are planning our next vacation to either India or Thailand. Are you going to be in either of those places at all? Except, I think you have your itinerary planned for when we will be going which is probably september. Maybe one of the other two years we can catch you somewhere!! Love your guts, and I will get a hold of you on the phone before you leave. It is my new goal in life!!

oh, I also wanted to tell you. You might already know, but I am adding you to my link list on my blog which is: nateolsonfamily.blogspot.com.

Damn! It's sitting on our armchair and your leaving on a jet plane. If you're going for bulk-every backpacking, world traveler needs bulk-'The Stand'

So jealous! Have a great time. Let me know if you're anywhere near Beijing or Yunnan province of China in October '07. Sorry that I'll miss you in LA before you leave - I'm there on the 17th!

I agree on "You Shall Know Our Velocity" a must for travel reading.
Have the best time!

When I lived in the Netherlands and traveled a bit my mom sent me a copy of William Least Heat Moon's "Blue Highways." I liked his pace and appreciation of the extraordinary in the commonplace. For a trip such as yours it might be a good companion...especially a year or so into the trip when you may wish to be reminded of your homeland. I'll try to remind you mid 2009.

Three days and counting...I wish I was in your flip flops!

Cressida-

Didn't get to see you much in THE CITY but I am jealous as hell. I have done it for a year and would have loved to tack on 2 more.

Books to many but a few favorites:
Godfather
Papillion
Life of Pi
Ishmael
My Ishamel
some Chomsky (interesting when traveling in other countries)

I will let you know as I remember more. Did you leave with Dr. Bronners liquid soap or Ex-officio undies.. if not, the first person that visits you will need to bring them...

Old proverb (probably wrong but..)"May the wind be at your back and the road rise to meet you"
